Rockport Winter Birding
We travel to Rockport every winter for several days of bird observation and photography, with an emphasis on the wild Whooping Crane flock that returns to that area every winter from Wood Buffalo National Park in Alberta, Canada. We are rarely disappointed as we see Whooping Cranes nearly every day, including a family that stake out their territory on the Lamar Peninsula near Goose Island State Park where we are usually camping. Our closest Whooper sightings have been from the M/V Skimmer with Captain Tommy, where we encountered a family that moved fairly close to the boat, and we watched one Crane pluck a large blue crab from the water. There are always plenty of other opportunities for close-ups of other beautiful birds, some of which we seldom see in our area. We hope you enjoy these images; we really enjoy the experience of being present to make them!
